Stone arch7/27/2023 To build an arch, wedge-shaped stones are required. Building walls with stones shaped like oversized bricks was all simple enough, but building the arches was another story. These large blocks of stone were easily stacked, being laid into a bed of mortar with the aid of a hand operated crane. Since the stones were limestone, they could be cut very simply into massive, brick-like blocks in this fashion. Granted, the spandrel walls of the bridges were pretty simple to build the stones were usually quarried out of hillsides with feathers-and-wedges. To be sure, these local farmers often had little stone masonry training, but they were shown what to do, and with what success needs only to be determined by looking at Walter Sharp’s bridges. These structures were built with a degree of pride, often by the very people who would use them the most. This practice kept his costs down and made his bridges rather popular projects locally. Rather than hire a team of professional masons, Walter Sharp hired local people - usually farmers - to build his bridges. One factor that played into Walter Sharp’s competitive bridge prices was the fact that he used local labor. The Secret to Walter Sharp’s Success: Local Labor And it would appear that other builders of Cowley’s bridges more or less adapted Sharp’s methods. Walter Sharp was responsible for most (though not all) of the famous Cowley County stone arch bridges, including this one over Timber Creek near Floral. Stone arch bridges could be fantastically expensive (as an example, the famous Clements Bridge in Chase County, Kansas, was triple the cost of the largest stone arch bridge in the state - the Dunkard Mill Bridge, which Walter Sharp built.) However, whereas some stone arch bridges were quite expensive, Walter Sharp’s pricing proved to be but slightly more expensive than the cost of a steel bridge, and his stone bridges lasted much longer with much less maintenance than a steel bridge could. The Cowley commissioners were apparently already aware of the permanence of stone arch bridges, but did not know of anyone who could build them at a cost they could afford. Cowley County needed permanent bridges at affordable costs, and Walter Sharp provided them. While in Kansas Walter Sharp was already well known in Marion, Chase, Greenwood, and Butler counties, it was in Cowley County where he really rose to fame. And, unlike bridges built by other builders, Walter Sharp’s bridges rarely failed - surviving time and floods much better than wooden or even iron truss bridges did. He quickly rose to prominence, as his highly competitive pricing allowed him to win numerous contracts. Walter Sharp seemingly appeared out of nowhere early on in Kansas’s years of stone arch bridge building. While primarily building in Kansas, he also built several stone arch bridges in other places, such as New Mexico. There is no admission fee.Perhaps one of the most well-known individual stone arch bridge builders is Walter Sharp. Artisan pizza7/27/2023 These topping amounts are for one 14-inch pizza. If you’d like to make this pizza vegetarian, simply omit the prosciutto. Allow the glaze to cool, then run your finger through it. To test the consistency, place a spoonful of the glaze on a cool plate. If you’d like to make your own, simply reduce balsamic vinegar over medium-low heat until it reaches 230–235☏ or is syrupy and the consistency of honey. You can purchase balsamic vinegar glaze through online retailers or in some grocery stores. Shave the Parmigiano-Reggiano over the pizza using a vegetable peeler or truffle slicer. Drizzle the balsamic glaze over the pizza.ġ8. Distribute the prosciutto and figs over the cheese. Remove the pizza and place on a serving tray. Check the doneness of the bottom of the pizza.ġ5. Bake for 8–10 minutes, rotating 180° halfway through baking.ġ4. Load onto the baking steel or baking stone in the oven with a quick pull-away motion.ġ3. Slide the dough onto a peel or slide the peel at about a 5° angle under the dough, using quick, jerking back-and-forth motions, until it is completely on the peel.ġ2. Distribute the Manchego evenly inside the rim.ġ1. Keep stretching the dough until it reaches 14 inches in diameter.ġ0. Stretch your hands apart gently, rotating the dough 90° as you stretch farther and farther. Place the dough disc on the backs of your hands so that the smooth side is in contact with your hands.ĩ. Flip the dough over and flatten the center again, pushing the dough in an outward motion to extend the central part of the dough. The point is to create an even disc that is flat in the center and has an even rim.ħ. Your fingers will arch naturally, so don’t make them too stiff.Ħ. You will not need your palms or thumbs yet. Press down on the dough with your fingers, leaving a 0.5–1 inch border. Place it on the worktable, seam side up and dust the top with more flour.ĥ. Lift the pizza dough from the sheet pan using a narrow, sharp bench knife.Ĥ. Preheat the oven to 550☏ for at least 30 minutes with a baking steel or baking stone in the top third of the oven.ģ. Grana Padano works well instead of Parmigiano-Reggiano.ġ. You can use spinach in place of the arugula. You can put the fruit on top of the arugula when you assemble it but there is a chance that it could roll off. If black figs are not in season, you can put stone fruit on this pizza apples, pears, persimmons, and poached quince work well, too. Young Manchego melts well on the pizza while older Manchego can be too dry to melt (and is more expensive). You can use pizza cheese (low-moisture mozzarella) or another semihard cheese instead of Manchego. Creating box sets in jutoh youtube7/26/2023 The text of the chapter title looks the same, but the look hides a subtle and crazy-making difference: the Style of this chapter title is Text Body: the same Style used by normal text in the manuscript. Now look at this figure (the Do NOT figure). Do NOT use ad-hoc font or size adjustments I changed the text from a normal paragraph to a chapter title by changing the Style selection from Text Body to Header 1. Notice also that the Font happens to be Arial and the font size happens to be 16.1. Notice that the figure above (the Do figure) shows a chapter title that uses the Style named “Heading 2”. The figures below illustrates these two approaches in LibreOffice: Do use the Header Style For example, in creating a chapter title, do use the Chapter Title Style (likely named Header 1 or such) do NOT manually adjust the font and font-size to make your chapter titles stand out. Find how your word processor represents Styles, and always use Styles rather than manually (ad-hoc) changing a paragraph’s font, font-size, or color. If you remember only one rule, remember this one, because it will save you hours of tedious reformatting later. Text Do’s Do use Styles rather than ad-hoc font, size, spacing, and color changes The list of Do’s and Don’ts below cover those consequences as well as other manuscript-writing tips that will make your work with Jutoh much easier. This one simple rule has several consequences when you write your manuscript. A separate set of information (the Style Sheet) tells the web browser or an eBook reading device how to display that text, such as “Display Header 1 text in boldface 16-point Arial font”. The idea behind this rule is that each block of text should include the name of its particular function, or Style, such as “Header 1”, “Quote”, or “Caption” – without saying anything about how to display text in that Style. Regardless of which word processor or formatting application you use to create eBooks, you can make your eBook formatting process a lot easier by following the basic HTML/CSS rule of separating content (the text and its structure) from presentation (the look of that text on the eBook reader’s screen). Many eBook formats are based on HTML and CSS: the Standards that make web pages automatically adapt to so many different devices. This page covers step 1: writing your manuscript so that it will be easy for you to import it into Jutoh. In Installing Jutoh on WIndows, I outlined the 4-step process of creating an eBook: Write your manuscript, Import it into Jutoh, generate the eBook files, and publish those files to Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing, Barnes & Noble’s Nook Press, Apple’s iBook Authors, and other electronic and print distributors. Wildermyth transformation7/26/2023 Players have access to a basic but still enjoyable trio of classes: warrior, hunter, and mystic. Doing these character events is recommended for the benefits, but they are just another form of generic quest.Īh yes, the great restorative known across worlds: the root beer. These quests only give rewards to one of the characters, levelling them up as well as increasing their retirement age. Occasionally, while moving as a group, two characters will have an option to undergo a quest. Often these roles will reverse as a believer in one event can be a skeptic in the next. For example, an event where a party finds something supernatural, such as a transformation or a talking rabbit, will always have one party member act as a believer, while the other becomes the skeptic despite being in a magical world. An unfortunate side effect to these generic quests is that characters will act in a way that does not make sense. Most tiles on a chapter’s world map unlock generic story events that can be found in any playthrough instead of progressing the main narrative. This is because the stories are left purposely vague, due to any character being able to be killed off in battle, and some campaigns lasting for generations. Villain scenarios have stories that start off interesting but ultimately have a repetitive theme. Generic scenarios of three or five chapters with minimal story can be played as well. Scenarios play out quickly and chapters can be completed in an hour or two. After this introductory scenario is completed, four campaigns of five chapter lengths against the other story villains are unlocked. The first portion of the game is a three-chapter scenario with a villain that works as a tutorial. Wildermyth is a blast to play through, and the enemies’ development can make every campaign feel different. Despite this blight, it’s an otherwise fascinating game. These scenarios have their promising moments are let down by a feeling of sameness that makes the characters feel generic rather than personal. The game is simpler than it looks at first, with a progression system, that due to its randomness, provides plenty of variety. Wildermyth is a turn-based tactical RPG that uses procedural generation for each of its story scenarios. Worldwalker Games has a roguelite tactical RPG on its hands to be excited about.
